My ‘Single plus’ approach to dating

Today I want to share with you a concept I was using since before the era of online dating. I call it, “Single PLUS…"

What is it?

When I was younger and people wanted to set me up with someone, I would always say they had to be “single, plus something else." The something else being some particular reason that this person thought we would be a good fit - not just because we're both single.

Single plus could be you're both single and

  • You both love going to sporting events 🏀

  • You both like to dance 🕺

  • You both have traveled abroad ✈️

  • You both went to a Big Ten school 🎓

  • You both love British crime shows 🕵️‍♀️

  • You both love that one really obscure band nobody has heard about! 🎸

  • You both have personalities that seem well suited for one another 😁

Single plus…. ANYTHING!

I just didn't want to be set up with someone because we were both single. I was hoping for at least one thread that would make a meaningful connection.

So, if you're out there dating and asking people to set you up, you might ask for connections that are single plus something else about them that person thinks you would enjoy.

If you're dating on dating apps, the same principle applies. You get to be your own matchmaker! Look for one or two things you think you might connect with someone on and go from here.

Note that meeting someone with a few shared interests does not mean you will be a match forever and ever amen.  But it could be a good place to start!
